Killed Oral Cholera Vaccines for the Global Control of Cholera

John D. Clemens, MD

Professor, Department of Epidemiology
Founding Director, UCLA Center for Global Infectious Diseases
UCLA Fielding School of Public Health

Despite the availability of modern oral cholera vaccines, which are safe and effective, vaccines have not played a role in efforts to control cholera, in part because of the expense of available vaccines. In 2000, with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a team at the International Vaccine Institute in Korea began an effort to create the world's first low-cost, safe and effective oral cholera vaccine. In this webinar, Dr. Clemens will discuss the history, development and impementation of the killed oral vaccine, which is predicted to have a major impact on the global problem of cholera.

Dr. John Clemens is a world-renowned expert in vaccine development and evaluation in developing countries. Prior to being named founding Director of the UCLA Center for Global Infectious Diseases last Fall, he served as founding Director-General of the Internation Vaccine Institute in Seoul, Korea. During his tenure, the institute's research program on vaccine discovery, development and deployment included work in over 30 countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Dr. Clemens' research has focused on innovative methodological approaches to evaluating vaccines in developing country populations, and to generating evidence needed for policy decisions about vaccine introduction in developing countries. His work in the developing world has included studies in Bangladesh, Chile, China, Egypt, Indonesia, Mozambique, Pakistan, Thailand and Vietnam.
